9 Year Mortgage Recommends 6 Ways to Save on Your Summer Vacation

The kids will soon be out of school, temperatures are rising, and there are just a few more days until it’s officially summer. If you are planning on taking a summer trip it can be challenging to stay on a budget, especially with the price of. 9 Year Mortgage has a few suggestions to save some money on your vacation.

Be Flexible. You will save the most if you keep your options for time and place open. Prices for airfare can vary greatly depending on the week. If you are open to multiple weeks during the summer, you have a better chance of getting the best deal. 9 Year Mortgage also suggests that you check the price for a different airport than the one closest to your destination. You can often find cheaper airfare if you look at other airports in the area.

Look for coupons. If you already know where you want to go, search online for coupons. 9 Year Mortgage also suggests signing up for mailing lists for the destination you are interested in which will generally email you great deals in the area.

Stay close to home. The further you go, the more likely it is that you will spend more. Choose a destination that is within a day’s drive or opt for a ‘staycation’.  A road trip will be much cheaper than flying. Keep in mind that in-state attractions often offer discounts for residents. 9 Year Mortgage also suggests checking out your state’s tourism guide for some ideas.

Save on Airfare. If you do decide to fly to your destination, make sure you book several weeks in advance and keep in mind that flying on Tuesday or Wednesday is generally the cheapest option. 9 Year mortgage also advises that you book your flight early in the week when rates are cheaper.  Be sure to take only carry-on luggage, as checking one bag can cost up to $100.

Limit Trips to restaurants. Stocking a cooler with food and drinks in the car will be a lot cheaper than stopping for food. In addition, most hotel rooms have at least a mini fridge and a microwave so you’ll be able to store some food to avoid having to eat out for every meal. Try bringing enough food with you so you can eat one meal per day at the hotel or on the go. Breakfast is usually an easy one to eat at the hotel because you can bring cereal and milk or granola bars.  Your hotel might even offer a free breakfast, which you should take advantage of.  Stock up on things like crackers, fruit, nuts, and beef jerky which are filling and do not need to be refrigerated so you’ll have something to snack on while you are out and about. When you do decide to go out to eat, check out deal sites like Living Social or Groupon which can save you 50% on meals in restaurants.

Take advantage of discounts you already qualify for. If you’ve been racking up points on your credit card, this is a great opportunity to use them. Put your accumulated points to good use on rental cars, airfare, or for your hotel which can save you hundreds of dollars. If you are a member of AAA, 9 Year Mortgage suggests you check out what discounts you can find on car rentals, hotels, or attractions in the area you are planning to visit.
